Giant Nigeria Snails Seized & Destroyed At Los Angeles Airport

A shipment of several dozen live giant Nigerian snails, weighing some 2lb (0.9kg) each, has been seized by officials at Los Angeles International Airport.

The 67 snails, measuring about six inches (15cm) in length, arrived from Lagos, Nigeria, in two plastic baskets with paperwork describing them as being for human consumption, custom inspectors said.

The snails are considered a delicacy in Nigeria but are also voracious pests that eat not just plants, but paint and stucco off houses.

It was the largest such shipment ever seized at LAX, the US Customs and Border Protection agency said.

Man Nabbed With 1.370kg of Cocaine at Lagos Airport

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), yesterday, arrested a 34-year- old drug suspect with 1.370 kilogrammes of whitish powdery substance that tested positive for cocaine at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

The suspect, Mr. Nriagwu Augustine Ifeanyi, was apprehended during the screening of passengers on a Turkish Airline flight at the departure hall of the airport.

Speaking on the arrest, NDLEA Commander at the Lagos Airport, Mr. Hamza Umar, noted that the suspect hid the drug and packed them in two parcels inside a laptop bag.

FG Erects Fresh Security Hurdles at Nigerian Airports

Visitors to the Nigerian Airports across the country, shall, beginning from February, 2014 have fresh stiffer security hurdles to battle with, after the Federal Government on Monday approved stringent new security measures at the airports.

It was also gathered that both American, Chinese and British governments have donated modern passenger screening equipment to the authority of the airport, to assist in the newly introduced 100 per cent security screening of both passengers and baggage.

Police Find $7.2 Million Cash Stashed In Suitcases At Airport In Panama

It started when police found nearly $7.2 million stuffed in eight suitcases at a Panama airport. Investigators say they suspect the cash, which had been concealed in hidden compartments in luggage on a flight from Honduras, was being moved for a powerful cartel, but they haven't said which one. The money was mostly in U.S. $100 bills, authorities said.

In a case that highlights the regional impacts of the drug trade, now Honduran investigators are trying to figure out how the suitcases slipped by airport authorities, drug police and special investigators at the Toncontin airport in Tegucigalpa.

Boko Haram Attack Maiduguri Airport

There are indications that the Boko Haram has attacked the Maiduguri Airport in Borno State. The attack, according to unconfirmed reports has recorded several casualties as Suspected Boko Haram terrorists, Monday morning, attacked the Composite Group Air force Base and other places in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital.

The siege which started at about 3am shook the town as sporadic gunshots and other Rocket Propelled Grenade Launchers fire were heard, with ensuing airstrikes in Maiduguri and Jere metropolis till 8 am.

Sources said during the attacks on the Air force Base and other targets, including the Maiduguri International Airport, several people were killed as the terrorists, numbering over 300-planted explosives in targeted areas in the state capital.

Man Sends Bandits to Rob Father of N61m

A 31-year-old man, Kabiru Mohammed, has confessed to hiring a seven-man robbery gang to steal $383,000 (N61, 280, 000) from his father. The suspect, who works with his father, told PUNCH that he hired notorious robbery kingpin, Abiodun Ogunjobi, aka Godogodo, to steal the money from his father who owns a bureau de change at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

Godogodo, who owned up to the crime, saying that the gang robbed Mohammed’s father twice. Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, said the suspects would soon be charged to court.

DMX Arrested At South Carolina Airport On Driving Charges

Rapper DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, was arrested outside a South Carolina airport on Monday for driving with a suspended license and without a vehicle tag and insurance, according to the Spartanburg County Detention Center. Airport police familiar with Simmons and his lengthy arrest history stopped the rapper as he was driving up to the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport early on Monday evening, a police dispatcher said.

Benin Airport Shut Over Tax Evasion By FAAN Staff

The Edo State Government, through its Inland Revenue Services, has shut  the Benin Airport, over evasion of taxes by airport workers.

However, in a shift reaction, the spokesperson, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr Yakubu Dati, described the development as an ``invasion``.

Dati said this in a news release made available to aviation correspondents at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja.

``We learnt early this morning that some people belonging to the Edo State Inland Revenue Service shut the Benin Airport over what our staff described as non-payment of taxes.

 ``This is coming to us as a rude shock, because they could have explored all lines of dialogue, instead of just taking the laws into their hands.

 ``To close Benin Airport is not good for the security and safety of the airport environment, `` he said.

Channels TV reports that A police officer attached to and AIC Limited, owned by Harry Akande on Tuesday threatened to 'gun down' an official of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

AIC on Tuesday stormed the airport premises to reclaim the land which was taken away from the company but was resisted by FAAN's Aviation Security officials, who threw caution to the wind and battled members of the AIC, including throwing stones at Mr Akande.
