SCANDAL: Football's governing body has launched a bizarre legal bid

FOOTBALL's governing body has acknowledged that bribes were paid in voting contests for the 1998 and 2010 World Cups but claims it is the victim of corruption.

FIFA has launched a bizarre legal bid to claim back "tens of mllions of dollars" swindled by its own fraudulent officials.

In legal papers filed in New York, FIFA says 41 former officials and marketing executives took bribes and stole money from football’s governing body.

The organisation has demanded a return of salaries and payment of damages. 

The legal papers also reveal FIFA believes South Africa paid a bribe of $10m (£7m) to win the right to host the 2010 World Cup.

Brazil is braced for trouble after the dreams of millions of football fans were left in tatters last night.

Spectators inside The Mineirao Stadium in Belo Horizonte were in tears as their side succumbed to a humiliating 7-1 defeat to Germany in the World Cup semi-final, ending dreams of a title on home soil.

In response, riot police were out in force in several Brazilian cities in case trouble kicked off. In Rio de Janeiro officers descended on Copacabana beach amid reports of gunfire. 

Authorities were called to a densely-populated area of Sao Paulo after football supporters reportedly set a bus alight, leaving it as little more than a burnt-out shell.

But so far the widespread reaction has been of sadness, not anger. The team, led by stand-in captain David Luiz, were booed off following the disappointing performance, the biggest defeat in a World Cup semi-final and Brazil's worst loss in their history.

Super Eagles Coach, Stephen Keshi, is optimistic that apart from beating Ethiopia in Saturday’s World Cup qualifier in Calabar, his team can also win the Brazil 2014 World Cup.

He said, “Nothing is impossible in football; we can win the trophy in Brazil but the immediate task at hand is to qualify first for the World Cup.“We have not qualified but on the verge of doing so and we must not let down our guards at this crucial moment.”

FIFA has APPROVED Goal-Line Technology to be used at 2014 World Cup

Fifa has announced that Goal-Line Technology (GLT) will be used at both the 2013 Confederations Cup and the 2014 World Cup.

The scheme underwent a trial during December’s Club World Cup, and the governing body has decided to put it to further use at their upcoming competitions.

“The aim is to use GLT in order to support the match officials and to install a system in all stadia, pending the successful installation, and pre-match referee tests,” a statement read.

“With different technologies on the market, Fifa has launched a tender today, setting out the technical requirements for the two forthcoming competitions in Brazil.
