Malala Yousafzai has arrived Nigeria to campaign for the release of the schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram. The 17 year old girls’ education campaigner, arrived Abuja early sunday morning, saying, “We must not be silent”. She is expected to meet with families of the abducted school girls and with President Goodluck Jonathan to pressure the government to ensure the safe release of the school girls.

Troops on patrol around Delwa and neighbouring communities (in Borno state yesterday Wednesday July 9th) successfully broke through insurgents’ ambush 35kilometres to Maiduguri as they advanced to dislodge insurgents who were massing up in the area.

The fierce fire fight that ensued as the troops wadded through the ambush left scores of insurgents dead, while 3 soldiers died in action. 7 soldiers who incurred various degrees of injuries have been evacuated for treatment while the troops have continued with their mission.

Boko Haram Recaptures 45 Out of The 63 Women Who Escaped in Borno

Forty Five out of the 63 women and children who escaped being abducted by Boko Haram insurgents at Damboa and Chibok villages in Borno State; have been recaptured by the Islamic terror group, after attacking military and police formations in Damboa last Friday night. Sources said that those escaped from the gunmen were 18, leaving 45 abductees in the hands of insurgents.

Scores of the Boko Haram insurgents and 17 soldiers and several policemen died during the attack to re-capture the women and children.

Speaking of the recapture of the victims in a telephone interview yesterday in Maiduguri, Abass Gava, a member of Chibok Vigilante Group said that 63 women and children who initially escaped during the clashes between the military and Boko Haram had been recaptured, while attempting to flee from the camps where they were held in their respective villages.

Nigerian Troops 'Cannot Take On Terrorists'

A host of African countries with Western backing may have "declared war" on Boko Haram - but one Nigerian soldier has told Sky News how they have little equipment to take on the terrorists and what weapons they do have are old, worn down and ineffective.

He spoke to us on condition of anonymity: "If my superiors know I have spoken to you, I will be jailed and tortured."

But he described an army which is haemorrhaging morale and which lacks the will or the means to take on the terrorists.

He said his views reflected the feelings felt throughout the army about the war on terror in Nigeria's northeast.

Boko Haram Kidnaps 103 Girls from Secondary School in Borno, Nigeria

Suspected members of Boko Haram sect yesterday while the country was still mourning the death of those killed at Nyanya motor park blast, abducted 103 students in a daring raid at the Girls Secondary School in Chibok; a town on the border between Borno and Adamawa States.

A soldier guiding the school was killed, while several villagers were wounded in the process, before they made away with the girls. The police commissioner in Borno State, Lawan Tanko, has confirmed the incident. Very sad. I don’t know if they intend to train these girls as well, but from previous reports, most of them are kept and used as sex slaves. 

Boko Haram Massacres JAMB Students, Kills 200 Others in Borno, Nigeria

Many students travelling at the weekend to sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, in Borno State, were reportedly killed by the dreaded Boko Haram sect, in various attacks believed to have claimed over 200 lives in the past two days.

The UTME, conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) was held nationwide yesterday. The students, according to sources, lost their lives as the sect embarked on multiple attacks that affected no fewer than four communities in the state.

Sources disclosed that the insurgents laid in ambush for the students, who were in eight vehicles and who were on their way to Biu from Maiduguri, to write the exams. It could not be ascertained if all the students in the eight vehicles were killed during the attacks.

Boko Haram Bombs Market, Kills 29 in Borno

SUSPECTED members of the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram, have again bombed a market in Nguro-Soye, near Bama, Borno State, killing no fewer than 29 persons.

Reuters reported on Sunday that the attack on the market was said to have been carried out on Saturday night.

“I travelled to Bama to buy bags of beans. Suddenly, there was a deafening bang at the middle of the market. It was in the late afternoon and commercial activities were at their peak,” said Shuaibu Abdulahi, a trader at the market. He estimated the death toll to be as high as 29.

Abba Tahir, a bus driver who was said to be offloading passengers at the market during the incident, said he counted 20 bodies.

“People were helping in evacuating the corpses after the confusion had died down. Some people who were injured were taken to the general hospital,” Tahir added.

Massacre Continues As Boko Haram Attacks Another Borno Village, Many Feared Killed

Jakana Village in Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State was on Monday night attacked by gunmen believed to be members of the Boko Haram.

‪Jakana is 36km away from Maiduguri, the state capital, and about 20km from Mainok, the village where 39 people were massacred by the Boko Haram on Saturday.

‪Though details of the Monday night attack that lasted till around 3 a.m. are still sketchy for now, some of the villagers who were able to escape the attack said many may have been affected by the incident.

‪Its gathered that villagers from a neighbouring village of Auno fled to Njimtilo, another village outside Maiduguri, upon seeing the skies being lighted by burning fire from the direction of the attacked village.

NIGERIA: BLOODBATH IN BORNO

The Joint Task Force (JTF) in Borno, yesterday said it killed 17 suspected members of the Boko Haram sect and lost a soldier during gun battle at the sect’s suspected camps where it recovered some arms, barely a week after a section of the sect declared ceasefire.

Spokesman of the task force, Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa in a statement yesterday, said the JTF, with the support of the Nigerian Air Force Helicopter Gunship, conducted two special operations on suspected Boko Haram camps at Sambisa, Bama Local Government area and Farin-Ruwa Forest, south west/east of Damboa Local Government, killing no fewer than 17 gunmen suspected to be of Boko Haram sect.
