David Basilio Cueva was watching TV after a row with his girlfriend when he grabbed the toddler by the neck, threw her against a wall and stamped on her repeatedly.
The child, named Maria, died in the incident, but Cueva told doctors she fell down the stairs.
Suspicious medics, however, called the police, who discovered the sick truth when Cueva confessed.
A police spokesman said: "From the baby’s injuries it was clear that this had been an attack and not an accident.
"When we questioned the couple he confessed and said he had been watching television when his mind had clouded over and he saw the girl as Chucky the devil doll who wanted to attack him.
"He said he acted in self-defence, but had not meant to kill her."
The man's girlfriend, Lorena Aguilar, 19, told officials that he was jealous of the attention she gave Maria and had stormed out to go to the shops.
Upon her return, she was apparently threatened at knife point to corroborate the story.
Both are now in custody in the city of Trujillo, Peru.
Aguilar’s uncle Oscar Cano, 45, told local media: "She didn’t tell the truth because she was threatened.
"This man mistreated her and he’s the one responsible for Maria’s death.
"We’re going to appeal against the arrest and try to get my niece out of prison because she is innocent."
