A CRY FOR HELP - THE SAD STORY OF OMOWUNMI ADEKOYA

For young Omowunmi Adekoya, her dream of being a successful business woman may be truncated if the ulcerous sore on her right knee is not surgically treated.

What started as a boil when she was seven years old has become a festering sore, slowly peeling off the flesh covering the knee. Her mother lamented about her daughter's plight. "She came home from school when she was seven years old and complained of pain on her right knee. I examined it and felt it was just a boil not until I noticed she couldn't stand properly.”

Omowunmi was quickly taken to a nearby hospital where she received some treatment.

For a while, everything seemed alright until few years ago. Her skin was gradually decaying, exposing the bone on the knee.

"I can't stand properly; my leg is no longer straight. I can't go to school or do anything." cried out Omowunmi.

She has undertaken various surgical operations to restore her leg, including a skin graft since her flesh was almost dead. She currently uses a crutch to walk.
This debilitating incident has hindered Omowunmi from furthering her studies. Daily, she sits at her mother's stall, watching painfully as her dreams fade away. She is exposed to ridicule and jest from her peers while her mother had been accused of witchcraft.

Omowunmi live with her parents in a remote area at Ibafon, Ogun state, and is the last child of her mother. Her parents had spent the meagre savings they earn from the petty trading they do to ensure Omowunmi get adequate medical attention. But it seems the burden is beyond their financial capacity as they are asked to pay the sum of N1m for a surgical operation that will restore the health of their baby.

“We have been to various hospitals. The mother takes her to Igbobi hospital almost fortnightly and it’s affecting us financially.” said the father.

"The doctor at Igbobi hospital told us to pay the sum of N1m for a specialist who would be flying from the United States to operate on my daughter by April. I'm begging Nigerians to please come to our aid. I have spent all my savings on this problem and I'm left with nothing. You can see the condition of my house. Please, I beg Nigerians, save my daughter's life so that she can contribute to the development of our nation in the future." pleaded Mrs Adekoya.
