At least five people are dead and 20 wounded after a gunman opened fire in a packed cafe in Serbia.
The man, who has been identified only as Z. S., reportedly killed his wife and another woman before entering a cafe armed with an assault rifle in the early hours of this morning.
Police say the suspect was arrested at the scene in a village close to Zrenjanin, which is some 50km north-west of Belgrade, and remains in custody.
‘He just pulled out a gun and started shooting, first into the air,’ one of the witnesses, Svetozar Manojlovic, Serbian state TV.
‘It sounded like firecrackers at first. Then the guy next to me fell down and others started falling down. It was total chaos.’
Cafe guests managed to wrest the gun out of the attacker’s hands, the Serbian Interior Ministry said.
