Experts have estimated that the marijuana industry could be worth $13.4billion by 2020.
A total of 23 US states have set up medicinal marijuana programmes – with a number legalising it for recreational use.
However, it is still outlawed in the eyes of the federal government.
But experts at IBISWorld believe the ‘growing acceptance’ of weed will result in sales in the billions.
Dmitry Diment, of IBISWorld, said in a statement: ‘The growing acceptance of medical marijuana is providing growers and investors with unprecedented opportunities.
‘There has been no shortage of demand in recent years, as the industry has benefited from increased acceptance of the legitimacy of medical marijuana products.’
