The skeleton, that was dug up in the ruins of the ancient Bulgarian city of Perperikon was found by archaeologist Professor Nikolai Ovcharov, who is known as the Indiana Jones of Bulgaria.
An iron spike is clearly visible sticking out of the chest bones, and Professor Ovcharov thinks it was to stop the corpse rising up from the dead and terrorising the living.
He said: "We have no doubts that once again we’re seeing an anti-vampire ritual being carried out.
"Often they were applied to people who had died in unusual circumstances – such as suicide."
The iron rod had been hammered into the chest of the dead man, who experts believe was in his 40s or 50s when he died.
Perperikon, an ancient Thracian city located close to the Greek border, was discovered 20 years ago and is thought to be the site of the Temple of Dionysius – the Greek God of wine and fertility.
