The 48-year-old star of Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta, whose real name is Raymond Scott, had been driving in the funeral procession in Duxbury, Massachusetts, on Saturday, when Gai Scott pulled alongside in a Bentley and fired into Benzino's Dodge SUV, according to authorities.
The boss of Hip-Hop Weekly sought help from a passerby and was taken to hospital with gunshot wounds, where he is reported to be in a critical condition.
Family and friends are said to be at his bedside, including fiancee Althea Heart.
It is claimed there had been an on-going feud between the pair.
He is due to appear in court on Monday.
In a statement, a representative for Benzino said he had been shot in the shoulder.
"At this time we ask that you keep Benzino in your prayers as we are hoping for a speedy recovery," it added.
His mother's funeral service in Plymouth, although delayed by the shooting and police questioning of mourners, went ahead.
