Sub-zero temperatures in Kentucky
have forced an escaped prisoner to give up his short-lived life on the run. Robert Vick, who fled from a minimum security facility in
Lexington on Sunday, surrendered to authorities on Monday after temperatures in
the region plunged in the freezing weather sweeping across the United States.
Vick walked into a motel and told the clerk he wanted to turn
himself in and escape the Arctic air, Lexington police spokeswoman Sherelle
Roberts said.
Wind chill readings in Lexington were -29C (-20F) on Monday.
"This was definitely of his own volition," Ms Roberts
said. "It's cold out there, too cold to run around. I can understand why
the suspect would turn himself in."
Vick would have been dressed in prison-issued khaki pants, a
shirt and a jacket when he escaped, said Department of Corrections spokeswoman
Lisa Lamb.
Paramedics treated Vick for hypothermia and he was returned to
Blackburn Correctional Complex.
Vick is serving a six-year sentence for burglary and
criminal possession of a forged instrument.
Record low temperatures have been registered in several parts of
the US as a polar vortex pushed an Arctic blast across the country.
More than 187 million Americans have been affected, with
officials warning people that their skin could freeze within minutes if they go
outside.
