Co-Pilot of Flight MH370 Tried to Make Call After Plane Vanished but 'Was Abruptly Cut Off'

The Malaysian plane has not been found 35 days after it went missing and according to new reports, the co-pilot of the missing flight tried to make a desperate call from his mobile phone after the aircraft went missing but was abruptly cut off... UK Daily Mail reports

Investigators have learned the call was made from a mobile phone which belonged to Fariq Abdul Hamid (left) as the Boeing 777 flew low near the island of Penang, on the north of Malaysia's west coast. It was understood the aircraft, with 239 people on board, was flying low enough for the nearest telecommunications tower to pick up Fariq's signal. The call ended abruptly. However, contact was definitely established with a telecommunications sub-station in Penang state. Experts have said it is possible for a mobile phone to be connected to a telecommunications tower at an altitude of 7,000 feet - which is low for a large jet like the Boeing 777 unless it was flying at high speed to maintain height. Yesterday it looked like the black box may had been located deep in the Indian Ocean.

Missing Plane: MH370 Team Detect Two Signals

Teams searching for missing flight MH370 believe they may have detected the plane's black box flight recorders after a ship picked up signals in the southern Indian Ocean.

The Australian defence vessel Ocean Shield picked up signals twice, around 370 miles north of where two signals were detected by a Chinese ship on Saturday.

Crucially, there were two distinct pinger returns - suggesting transmissions from a flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder on a Boeing 777 jet.
Angus Houston, the former Australian defence chief heading the search, said the information was "the most promising lead" in the search so far.

But he warned it could be days before authorities confirm if the signals are from the Malaysia Airlines flight, which vanished on March 8 with 239 people on board.

Missing Malaysia Plane 'Crashed Into Indian Ocean'

Malaysia's prime minister has announced on the basis of new analysis it must be concluded that missing flight MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean.

He said Malaysia Airlines had told the families of the 239 people on board. 

Earlier the BBC saw a text message sent to families saying it had to be assumed "beyond reasonable doubt" that the plane was lost and there were no survivors.

Flight MH370 went missing after taking off on 8 March.

The announcement by PM Najib Razak came on the fifth day of an international search effort in the southern Indian Ocean. 

Missing Plane Mystery: Faces Of Flight MH370

It is 11 days since Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 disappeared in the night and investigators appear no closer to knowing the fate of the passengers and crew on board.

The names of the 239 people currently missing are listed in black and white in the plane's manifest.

But these colour photos show the faces of those who were on the flight.
There were 14 different nationalities among the 227 passengers and 12 crew travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, although the majority - 153 in all - were Chinese.

Other passengers came from the United States, Canada, Indonesia, Iran, Australia, India, France, New Zealand, Ukraine, Russia, Taiwan and the Netherlands.

Missing Plane: Police Probe Flight Engineer

Investigators say they are looking into the background of one of the passengers on board the missing Malaysia Airlines plane.

Mohd Khairul Amri Selamat said on social media sites he was a flight engineer working for a Swiss-based private jet charter company.

The 29-year-old's apparent experience means he would have a knowledge of in-flight computer systems and be able to carry out repairs.

However, as an engineer specialising in executive jets, he would not necessarily have had the skills required to divert and fly a Boeing 777.

A senior police official with knowledge of the investigation said: "The focus is on anyone who might have had aviation skills on that plane."

Missing Plane: 'Evidence Points To Hijack'

Efforts to divert the missing Malaysia Airlines plane needed "preparation and forethought" and appear to have been part of a hijack, aviation security experts have told Sky News.

While Malaysian authorities are refusing to say publicly that a hijack is the most likely scenario, the country's prime minister confirmed the plane had been deliberately diverted and its communications cut.

The Boeing 777-200 was heading from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board last Saturday when it disappeared around 40 minutes into its flight.

And experts say the fact Flight MH370 vanished in a so-called 'dead space' area - when Malaysian air traffic controllers handed over control to their Vietnamese counterparts - appears a crucial factor in the mystery.

No Missing Plane Wreckage At 'Debris Site'

No wreckage from the missing Malaysia Airlines plane has been found after a search of a possible debris site.

Malaysia and Vietnam sent aircraft to the sea off the southern tip of Vietnam and east of Malaysia on Wednesday evening after China released satellite images appearing to show potential debris.

Datuk Azharuddin Abdul Rahman, the head of Malaysia's Department of Civil Aviation, said: "There is nothing. We went there, there is nothing."

Vietnamese officials previously said the area had already been "searched thoroughly".

The release of the images briefly raised hopes of an end to the mystery surrounding the fate of flight MH370, which left Kuala Lumpur bound for Beijing six days ago with 239 people on board.

Missing Malaysia Jet Suspect 'Not Terrorist'

One of two men who used false passports to board the missing Malaysia Airlines flight was an Iranian asylum seeker and not believed to belong to a terrorist group, say police.

It came as search and rescue teams expanded their search for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 to include a vast area on the west peninsula of Malaysia at the Straits of Malacca.

Malaysian police have said that one of the two men was an 19-year-old Iranian asylum seeker trying to reach Germany.

The identity of the other man continues to be investigated.

Malaysia Airlines: Suspected Fragments Found

Suspected fragments from the missing Malaysia Airlines plane carrying 239 people have been found off Vietnam.

The Vietnamese navy said objects, one thought to be an aircraft door, were spotted by a rescue plane off the country's south coast.

Security services are investigating whether the Boeing 777-200 was destroyed in a terror attack.

Interpol said at least two passports used on the flight were stolen and it is "examining additional suspect passports".

The international police agency said it was of "great concern" that passengers were able to board the plane using stolen passports, and no checks were made against its database.
