Priest Says Raped And Murdered Journalist ‘Should Have Been Home In Bed’ On Night Of Attack

A Catholic priest has allegedly said that murdered journalist Jill Meagher should have been at home in bed the night she was raped and killed.
Mrs Meagher, originally from the Republic of Ireland and living in Australia where she worked for ABC, went missing in September 2012 after drinks with workmates.
But last week, the priest is alleged to have held up a newspaper with attacker Adrian Bayley’s face on it saying that if she had been ‘more faith-filled’ she ‘would have been home in bed… not walking down Sydney Road at 3am’, according to 3AW.
Her husband, Tom, has branded the comments disgusting and stupid. He wrote on Facebook: ‘How a human being with such dangerous and misogynistic views can be allowed to pass those messages onto children is depressing. What a truly abhorrent message to teach a child.’

Monsignor Greg Bennett, from the Melbourne archdioceses, said: ‘We do not share the sentiment of the homily this morning and we certainly apologise for the hurt that this homily may have caused today.
‘The reference to Jill Meagher in particular was offensive and inappropriate and the people of Victoria and Ireland mourn her sad and tragic death.’
Bayley was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of raping and killing Ms Meagher in Brunswick. He has since been found guilty of more than 20 rapes.
