A British man was left shocked after doctors discovered that he had a womb – meaning that he could potentially become pregnant.
The unidentified man’s condition was discovered when he underwent an MRI scan, after discovering blood in his urine.
The scan revealed that the unidentified 37-year-old, who is from Lancashire, possessed a functional set of female reproductive organs, causing periods, PMT and even the possibility of pregnancy.
Doctors believe that the man’s condition is persistent Müllerian duct syndrome (PMDS), a rare condition where a person has external male genitalia and internal female reproductive organs.
They have now urged him to undergo an operation to remove the female organs.
Speaking to The Sun, the man, who is in a relationship with a woman, stressed that he was still just an ‘ordinary bloke’.
‘The diagnosis came as a bombshell. I’m just a regular, red-blooded guy’, he said.
‘I’ve never seen myself as anything but an ordinary bloke who has a normal sex life.
‘I was shocked when the consultant said I had a fully functioning set of women’s reproductive organs, and I was even having periods.’
He has also said that he went through puberty normally, but later developed an ache after sex and discovered blood in his urine.
It is believed that the blood could be a result of his periods, while the post-sex ache was caused by PMT.
Although an upcoming DNA test will reveal his full gender balance, he says that he will continue life as a man regardless of the result, and has urged men who believe that they could have the same condition to seek medical advice.
He added: ‘I can’t believe I’m the only person with this. And I hope any other man with similar symptoms will get checked out.’
Around 120 babies in the UK are born with persistent Müllerian duct syndrome every year, and the condition has also been reported in dogs.
