A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, Wednesday, sentenced a 21-year-old year old blind man, Nura Abdullahi, to five years imprisonment for unlawfully dealing in 62 kilogrammes of marijuana.
The convict was said to have gone blind in prison while awaiting trial since his arrest on March 19, 2013.
In his ruling, Justice Mohammed Yunusa sentenced Abdullahi to five years in imprisonment following his confessional statement and the exhibits tendered before the court by the prosecution.
The convict, who was re-arraigned on September 3 on one count charge of unlawful possession of marijuana, pleaded guilty to the offence.
During the proceedings, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency’s prosecutor, J.I. Aernan, reviewed the facts of the case.
Aernan, who represented M.U. Ewah during the proceedings, tendered the illicit substance recovered from Abdullahi two years ago.
According to the prosecutor, the offence contravened Section 11 (b) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap N30, Law of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
Following the evidence presented before the court, Justice Yunusa said he was convinced that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
Yunusa consequently sentenced Abdullahi to five years imprisonment from the day he was apprehended.
