Politicians are often
accused of being too far removed from the people their policies affect. The same can’t be said for Angela Merkel.
The Chancellor of Germany has been filmed telling a
girl in floods of tears why she must be deported.
In a televised debate, Ms Merkel told
a young Palestinian asylum seeker called Reem why she cannot stay in
Germany.
Reem – who entered
Germany four years ago with her family and is now facing deportation – said: ‘I
have goals like anyone else. I want to study. It’s very unpleasant to see how
others can enjoy life, and I can’t.
Merkel responded:
‘Politics is sometimes hard. You’re right in front of me now and you’re an
extremely sympathetic person. But you also know in the Palestinian refugee
camps in Lebanon are thousands and thousands and if we were to say you can all
come… we just can’t manage it.’
Realising she was
crying, the chancellor approached Reem and said: ‘You were great. I know it’s
difficult for you.’
The encounter quickly
began trending on Twitter, via the #MerkelStreichelt hashtag.
