A mother-of-four who drowned her baby daughter in the bath because she was convinced the girl was possessed by Satan is facing life in jail.
Prosecutors say Tamara Artemova, 40, was arrested after taking toddler Natella, 3, into the bathroom at their apartment in the city of Kirov in central Russia and submerging her head under the water.
When the girl stopped struggling, she took her into the bedroom and laid her limp body on the bed where it was found shortly afterwards by her husband Borys, 45, when he returned from work.
Natella was rushed to hospital where doctors battled to save her but after briefly regaining consciousness, she died.
A prosecution spokesman said: 'When questioned the woman said she had been trying to exorcise the girl’s demons because she was possessed.
'She said that she had filled the bath with holy water and hoped that if the girl drank enough it would wash the Devil away.
'She has denied murder.'
Shocked neighbour Nail Abdulov, 54, said: 'She has three other children but became obsessed with the youngest one. She kept saying the Devil had taken control of the girl and that she was evil.
'I once asked her why she thought so and she said the girl had "hate in her eyes".'
A police spokesman said: 'When arrested she showed no remorse for what she had done, although she said she had not meant to kill her.'
The woman has now been sent for psychiatric evaluation and if found to be sane faces life in jail for infanticide.
