A former police officer jailed for murdering his wife killed his entire family when they came to visit him in prison.
Domingo Villa Arellano, 40, was jailed in maximum-security Puente Grande in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 2006 after killing his wife in a jealous rage.
But when his long-term girlfriend Isela, 36, took their two children and step-daughter to visit him in prison, no-one could have predicted what would happen next – despite Villa’s violent history.
After going from the prison grounds to a dormitory to avoid the rain, Villa’s children started complaining that their mother was unkind to them, and he snapped.
With a piece of sharpened wire, Villa stabbed Isela in the chest, then killed four-year-old Angel and suffocated baby Valeria, who was less than a year old. Erika Lizeth, 17, managed to escape the dormitory despite being seriously wounded, but died later from her injuries.
According to State Attorney General Luis Najera, all guards were busy during the incident. When they found Villa, he had turned the makeshift knife on himself, but was tackled to the floor before he did himself serious harm.
Villa is kept separate from other inmates at Puente Grande because of the risk posed to him as a former police officer.
After a large-scale search of the prison following the crime, more than 50 litres of tequila and 30 knives were discovered, as well as a large quantity of drugs.
