A New York
anesthesiologist was recently arrested after authorities say he attacked a
woman who told him she was pregnant. According to reports, Dr. Thomas A.
Pfeiffer allegedly choked the unnamed woman and forced her to swallow
the morning after pill.
DailyFreeman reports: A Red
Hook man facing felony charges for allegedly choking an acquaintance and
forcing her to swallow a Plan B, or “morning after,” pill that could cause an
abortion is a licensed anesthesiologist who works out of HealthAlliance of the
Hudson Valley’s three hospitals and Northern Dutchess Hospital, according to a
manager at the Cross River Anesthesia Group, a medical practice in Kingston.
Dr.
Thomas A. Pfeiffer, 44, was taken into custody by Ulster County sheriff’s
deputies Wednesday night and charged with the felonies of abortion in the
second degree and strangulation and the misdemeanors of assault and criminal
mischief.
Pfeiffer was released from the Ulster County Jail on Friday after posting $50,000 bail.
According
to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies went to a home in Rosendale on Wednesday and
were told “by one or both” parties involved in a “violent domestic dispute”
that the woman called Pfeiffer after she got a positive result on a
home-pregnancy test.
He then
went to a pharmacy and bought the “Plan B” drug, which is available without a
prescription, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Pfeiffer
is accused of choking the woman and forcing her to ingest the emergency
contraceptive pill, which, according to its Food and Drug Administration label,
can prevent fertilized eggs from implanting in the womb.
The
woman suffered injuries to her throat and neck and was treated at
HealthAlliance Hospital’s Broadway Campus in Kingston, the Sheriff’s Office
said.
She was
described as “physically fine,” according to Detective Lt. Ed Brewster, but the
status of her pregnancy was not disclosed.
The Sheriff’s Office also did not describe the
nature of the relationship between Pfeiffer and the woman.
