Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teenager who was shot in the head for
promoting the education of women, has won the Nobel peace prize. Aged 17 she has become the youngest ever recipient of the £690,000 award.
The campaigner won the prestigious award along with Kailash Satyarthi, an Indian children’s rights activist.
The pair beat Edward Snowden, Chelsea Manning and the Pope for their incredible work in their respective fields.
Malala survived an attempt on her life two years ago when a Taliban gunman boarded her bus and fired at the school girl.
Despite suffering life-threatening head wounds, the campaigner made a
full recovery and continued her work as a voice for girl’s being
deprived an education throughout the world.
The Nobel committee praised her ‘heroic struggle’ in campaigning for girls’ education rights.
In a statement, the Nobel committee said: ‘Despite her youth, Malala
Yousafzai has already fought for several years for the right of girls to
education, and has shown by example that children and young people,
too, can contribute to improving their own situations.’
They added that she undertakes her work in ‘the most dangerous circumstances’.
