A California couple who had been married for 62 years have died just four hours apart, spending their last moments side by side.
They died in July. He was 90 and she was 87.
"He adored my grandmother, loved her to the end of the Earth," granddaughter Melissa Sloan told CBS.
A civil engineer, Mr Simpson at one point worked for the US Army in Germany.
The couple adopted twin boys from a German orphanage and returned to Bakersfield, where she worked as a nurse and he owned his own engineering company.
Two weeks ago, Mr Simpson was at home when he fell, breaking his hip.
The family took him to hospital, but his health quickly deteriorated.
His wife was battling cancer and her health was also declining.
So they were moved in a spare room in the family’s home, with their beds side by side. Maxine was first to pass away.
"They left this world together," said Ms Sloan.
"It's a true love story."
