'Miracle Baby' Survives 11-Storey Balcony Fall

A 15-month-old boy has survived falling 11 storeys from the balcony of his family's Minneapolis apartment.

The toddler fell from the high rise after slipping between a 5.5in (14cm) gap in the balcony railing.

He landed on a thin patch of mulch at the base of the building, mere feet away from the pavement.

A neighbour told WCCO-TV that he rushed to the toddler after he fell, and he "was really happy to see the baby was at least crying".
The boy remained in critical but stable condition on Wednesday, with several bone fractures and a punctured lung.
But doctors said the toddler did not suffer a serious head injury and is expected to survive.

Dr Tina Slusher told WCCO: "He definitely responds to us and he definitely moves everything."

Abdirizak Bihi knows the family and says the child's mother was running errands while his father watched the boy and his three-year-old sister.

He said the father had gone briefly into another room when the boy fell.

Neighbours and doctors have dubbed the toddler "the miracle baby", the Star Tribune reported.
Dr Slusher said: "That's a gift from God to the family because he shouldn't have made it."

Meanwhile, the owner of the apartment building met with community members to discuss measures to keep other children safe.

Revised city building codes require that railings be no more than 4in (10cm) apart, but the changes do not apply to buildings constructed before the revisions, inspectors said.
