A former Miss Venezuela beauty queen and her
British husband have been shot dead in front of their five-year-old daughter
while on holiday in South America. Monica Spear, a well-known Venezuelan TV star,
was with her 39-year-old husband Thomas Henry Berry when the couple were gunned
down in a roadside robbery.
Authorities say the pair were found dead inside
their car in Puerto Cabello, in Venezuela. Their daughter was found alive inside the vehicle
and taken to a medical centre for treatment.
The family lived in the US and were visiting
Venezuela on vacation. Local news reports said the couple's car had
broken down and they were waiting for a tow truck when the attack happened.
"The experts did a technical survey of the
site and the vehicle in which the couple was travelling was impounded for the
corresponding analysis," a police statement said.
Ms Spear was crowned Miss Venezuela in 2004 and
had since appeared in a number of popular Venezuelan television series.
Venezuela has one of the world's highest murder
rates, with 79 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants in 2013, according to the
Venezuelan Observatory of Violence.
