ABOUT THE BETH TORREY ORPHANAGE HOME FOR THE MENTALLY CHALLENGED AMUWO ODOFIN- LAGOS, NIGERIA
Is a home for mentally challenged children who have been found on the streets, abandoned by their families or outcast from their communities. It has about 24 children and adults in its care. The children are trained to develop domestic, social, theatrical and singing skills. They are taught how to read and write, while being nurtured in ‘Confidence, Competence, and Capability’.

Some are now fully grown adults, married with children, and some have jobs to support themselves. But some of the children are severely retarded and as such, they need constant supervision before they can successfully carry out certain tasks like housekeeping, feeding, and even earning a living as housekeepers. An American missionary, Elizabeth Torrey of Atlanta, Georgia in 1965, founded the home. The facility receives no government funding, and is kept operating only through donations.
