A Pregnant woman, Ekaiquo Ewa and her two children, Nancy 7, and Ewa 3, were burnt to death when a building that is used as a residential building and business outlet caught fire in Ugep over the weekend in Yakurr Local Government Area, in the Central Senatorial district of Cross River State.
The inferno which engulfed No. 27 Calabar Road at about 7p.m. caught the woman and her two children in their one room apartment while her husband, Denis Ewa was away from the house.
“We did not know the source of the fire and it is still a mystery to us how the fire started and spread so fast such that the woman and the two children could not escape and the time was just 7p.m. and people were many in the house” Okoi, a mechanic whose shop is close to the burnt house.
The woman, Okoi said is from Akwa Ibom State while her husband is from Abini, a neighboring village to Ugep.
“They have been living here for some time and the time the fire engulfed the house, Denis was not at home and efforts by other tenants to stop the fire did not yield fruits as the flames were too fierce”.
The fire razed several motor parts shops and a provision shop which occupy the front of the building and virtually nothing was rescued from the flames which outside consuming the roof and property brought down the walls of the house. “The fire came up so suddenly and fierce such that nobody could salvage anything” Okoi said.
The body of the woman has been deposited at the Ugep General Hospital Mortuary while those of the children have been buried.
A source at the Ugep Police Station said the matter was reported and incidented at the station.
