An
unstrapped container fell off Thursday and crushed two persons to death,
according to eyewitnesses. The victims are believed to be the driver of an Eko
Meat Van and his assistant. The
van was crushed along Agege Motor Road, Ikeja, Lagos, southwest Nigeria. Eyewitness
said six other injured victims were immediately taken to hospital for
treatment.
One
of the witnesses said what caused the accident at about 9.30 a.m was that a
truck conveying two 20 feet containers rammed into an Eko Meat Van when some
policemen attached to the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, were chasing a commercial
motorcycle operator, Okada, plying the prohibited Agege Motor Road.
The
driver of the truck apparently lost control of the vehicle and rammed into the
meat van. The
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, Lagos, Mr. Tunde Shobulo who was at
the scene of the crash said he was not aware that the police were chasing an
okada rider which resulted in the accident.
He
claimed that the van was driving against traffic and crashed into the oncoming
truck whose driver lost control because of the heavy load it was carrying.
He
said Lagos State government has prohibited trucks from moving in the day
without strapping the containers.
“You
can see the magnitude of the accident,” he said.
