How Long Sex Should Last According to Women – How Do You Measure Up?

Whether you're prone to premature ejaculation or you think you're a stallion in the sack, you've probably wondered how you compare to other men.

Well, a study published in the 2015 Journal of Sexual Medicine revealed the average sex session lasts just 5.4 minutes.

The survey looked into the sex lives of 474 straight men from the UK, the Netherlands, Spain, Turkey and the US to come up with the magic number.

The guys and their partners had to use a stopwatch to time their lusty encounters, starting the countdown at the moment of penile penetration and stopping at ejaculation.

Most guys kept going for between four and 11 minutes, but Brits came out on top in terms of longevity. Men from the UK held out for 10 minutes on average before blowing their load.

However, this study did not look into the length of the whole experience and din't account for foreplay. It also didn't take into account the "ideal" length of sex for women's maximum pleasure.

Another study published in the 2004 Journal of Sex Research found that participants enjoyed 11 to 13 minutes of foreplay followed by seven to eight minutes of intercourse.

This seems like it would be much more satisfying, but women wanted the sex to last twice as long. They revealed the ideal session would include around 25 minutes of foreplay followed by 14 to 16 minutes of doing the deed.

So how can men keep their stamina up in the sack?

Whether you experience premature ejaculation – which is when men regularly finish within two minutes – erectile dysfunction, or you're just a bit quick to the finish line, there are some easy ways you can become better in bed.

Here LloydsPharmacy’s Online Doctor, Dr Tom Brett, who has expertise in sexual health, reveals three enlightening tips on how to last longer in bed.

1. Behavioural Techniques

Try the ‘squeeze technique’ (squeeze the penis tip near climax to prevent ejaculation), and the stop-start technique (reduce simulation when nearing climax).

Squeezing the penis when you feel like you about to ejaculate, will reduce your impulse to do so.

With time you should be able to recognise the impulse and be able to build control with squeezing.

2. Slow Down

Generally, the faster the man has sex, the quicker he ejaculates. Rapid, hard thrusts result in a faster climax.

A slower, more measured technique means the penis tip is less stimulated and ejaculation delayed. It also allows for greater control over ejaculation.

3. Communication

Make sure you let your partner know what works for you and what doesn’t.

An open attitude towards sex should also relax you more and lessen the nerves that cause a swift ejaculation.

If you continue to experience problems there are treatments and counselling available.

Men who regularly experience premature ejaculation or erectile dysfunction may find treatment is the best option.
