Omar Pettigen then performed a solo sex act over the lifeless body of 64-year-old Nailah Pettigen as a "release", according to reports.
And Pettigen, 31, revealed to detectives how the shocking killing felt "good".
He even went out for a few beers with a friend hours after the murder, say cops, who claim he showed no remorse.
Retired maths teacher Nailah was found dead at the flat she shared with her son in Fremont, California, on September 29.
Cops were greeted with the gruesome scene of her dismembered body with her underwear around her ankles, on the bedroom floor.
It was five days before Pettigen was arrested, after his dad raised the alarm with police.
Pettigen reportedly told detectives he had attacked his mother with a Tomahawk - a traditional north American axe - before repeatedly shooting her in the back.
According to court documents, he said he masturbated over her corpse because "he needed to be with himself and he needed a release after the event."
Fremont police detective Craig Gaches said in the court affidavit: "I asked how he felt about his actions and he said, 'good'."
"During the interview, Omar did not show signs of remorse by crying or being upset in any way."
An autopsy of the horrific murder found the victim had been shot once in the head and six times in the chest.
She had also been sliced from her neck to her cervix.
Pettigen claimed he butchered his mum after objecting to her taking prescription painkillers oxycodone for hip and knee problems.
He told how he attacked Ms Pettigen after she pulled a gun on him.
