A drug addict who tore apart the home of an elderly dementia sufferer and stole nearly £20,000 has been ordered to pay back just £5.
Kelly Billen, 35, ransacked the home of Richard Jones, 94, taking £19,416.10 in premium bonds which she later cashed in.
But she was ordered to pay just £5 within six months of face a further seven days in custody after Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court heard she had no realisable assets, Wales Online reports.
‘The house was ransacked,’ said Ian Kolvin, prosecuting, describing the state of Mr. Jones’s home.
‘All the rooms had been searched.’
‘All the property had been searched and been turned upside down and even the insulation in the attic had been pulled up.
‘She [Billen] tried to obtain £20,843.16 in total and it is the crown’s case that she intended to gain considerably more than that.’
In an earlier hearing at the court, mother-of-one Billen was jailed for there years and three months after pleading guilty to burglary and eight counts of fraud.
She had denied the charges and tried to blame two other women, but later changed her plea.
The court heard how Billen had no previous convictions and had been a care worker and business owner before she became addicted to drugs.
‘This was a callous and calculated crime which could very easily have drained this innocent, vulnerable man of his life savings,’ South Wales Police Detective Constable Gareth Millard told the Mirror.
‘She deserves her time in prison and for people to know exactly what a manipulative deviant she is.’
