Everyone wants Leonardo DiCaprio to win an Oscar and it looks like the time is almost finally upon us.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the 40-year-old actor looks set to tackle the true story of Billy Milligan, the first person to successfully use multiple personality disorder as a defense in a court of law.
It’s a role which the Wolf Of Wall Street star has been eyeing for nearly 20 years, with the project being banded unsuccessfully around Hollywood for decades.
Now, he’s taking the bull by the horns with his production company, Appian Way, coming on board to co-produce The Crowded Room.
Based on a nonfiction book by Daniel Keyes’, it chronicles Milligan’s life, including his 1970s Ohio court trial after being charged with robbery and raping three women.
Pleading insanity, Milligan and his lawyers contended that two of his alternate personalities committed the crimes without his knowledge – ‘Adalana, a lesbian taking responsibility for the rapes; Ragen, a Yugoslavian communist who admitted to the robbery.’
He was the first to use this defense, and the first to be acquitted for this reason.
This meaty role would see DiCaprio portray 24 of Milligan’s different personalities.
