Why Celebrities Fail - Patrick Doyle

The name Patrick Doyle is not one that needs an introduction. The broadcaster-cum-entertainer is one of the forces in the showbiz industry in Nigeria.
The calm and easygoing man is married to a charming actress and show host, Ireti Doyle and their marriage is envy to many.
Patrick Doyle recently expressed his mind on why younger celebrities find it hard to remain relevant in the industry for a long time as well as have stable homes.
The actor pointed out that marriages of stars crumble because they virtually live it on the internet. “You see people posting things like, ‘Today, he annoyed me but I would manage him,’ on their Facebook and Twitter accounts.
“I feel sorry for the young people who feel they have a duty to keep their fans abreast of their life situation. They say things like, ‘my fans’.
I then ask, ‘who is your fan?’ The fact that someone admires your work does not make him your fan; he is just an admirer of your work. Let me give an instance of what a fan does. Start a fire, when it is about to quench, use a fan to blow it, what happens?
“These artistes consume themselves in the fire of fans. I do not live my life waiting for someone to be my fan. I want you to be my friend and admire my work. I do not need anybody to define me or boost my ego because I can rightly approximate my self-worth.
“They are so silly; they say things like, ‘I have 6,000 followers’. They forget that those 6,000 followers are also following a million other artistes. They are not your followers but followers of Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. When you say someone is your follower, he follows you alone, so don’t be fooled,” Patrick told Punch in an interview.
Speaking further, he said, “My wife and I are not the type you often see in the public. We are not the typical celebrities. Whenever we step out, it is work for us the same way an accountant would go to work in the morning and head home at the close of work.
“If I have to attend a movie premiere, it is work. I also do not post my thoughts on social media. Some of these new crops of artistes are so stupid that they go as far as posting how their spouse annoyed them on their social media platforms. My wife and I are not into that and that is why we are not really being scrutinized by the public.”
