A state inmate accused of fleeing a work detail in Pasco County was
charged Tuesday in an additional escape that apparently went undetected by
the Florida Department of Corrections.
ABC Action News reports: Jason Wayne Adams, 27, revealed
the escape to deputies after his Sept. 9 arrest in his latest attempt to flee
law enforcement.
Adams told deputies he escaped a work detail in Lutz on Aug. 28 and went to
the Metro Food Mart at 24050 S.R. 54, according to his arrest report. He
planned to smuggle chewing tobacco, cartons of cigarettes and alcoholic
beverages back to the Sumter Correctional Institute in Bushnell.
Video from the store shows that Adams changed from his inmate uniform before
going to the store, the report says. He then returned to his work crew without
corrections officers noticing.
“It’s pretty scary the fact that he’s out there in our community just
shopping,” Sheriff Chris Nocco said.
Adams was part of a work detail on S.R. 54 for two weeks. Deputies are
investigating whether he made other trips. They are also trying to determine if
he managed to get the items back to prison.
In his most recent escape attempt, Adams slipped away from a work detail on
Sept. 8, setting off an overnight search in Pasco County. He was found the next
day riding his bicycle near Broadway Avenue and Harris Parkway Place when a
deputy noticed him.
Henry Blackwell, a corrections officer in charge of the work detail,
resigned after he was confronted about discrepancies in a timeline he provided
as part an investigation into the escape.
State Corrections Secretary Mike Crews said Wednesday his agency will make
unannounced inspections of work details.
Adams is serving a six-year sentence for grand theft, burglary, fleeing an
officer and drug-related convictions.
