The Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission, EFCC, on Tuesday re- arrested John Yakubu Yesufu, a former Director
of the Police Pension Fund, who was on Monday given a slap on the wrist by an
Abuja High Court, after he was found guilty of stealing nearly N30 billion from
the Fund.
The court presided by Justice
Abubakar Talba, had set free Yesufu after a controversial plea bargain.
The verdict which has sparked
nationwide outrage is seen as another minus to the anti-corruption crusade of
the Goodluck Jonathan administration.
The ex-Director was asked to pay
a paltry N750,000 to avoid a jail sentence of six years.
EFCC spokesperson Mr. Wilson
Uwujaren said Yesufu is currently being detained at the Abuja office of the
agency for false declaration of assets, adding that he will soon face fresh
charges.
