A woman has died in a bungee jumping
accident in France.
The 28-year-old was doing
a tandem dive with a man, believed to be her boyfriend, at the popular spot
in Audincthun, near St Omer, in the Pas de Calais.
The man, 32, suffered
‘very serious injuries’ in the accident and is currently being treated in a
hospital in Lille.
Giving details of the
accident a police spokesperson said the couple climbed to the top of the
crane before leaping off in what should have been a routine tandem jump.
They added: ‘It is 65 meters high and they were meant to fall down
on an elasticated rope, and then bounce up again.
‘But instead something
went wrong with the mechanism and they hit the ground at speed.’
Investigators have not yet
released exact details on how the accident occurred, however they have said the
bungee rope ‘did not break’.
The two operators of the bungee crane are ‘under investigation for
manslaughter following the death of a client’, according the police.
Neither the woman or the
man have been named, but they are both French nationals.
Prosecutor Sébastien Piève
said: ‘Clearly there was a problem with the fixing of the couple to the rope.
‘We will see if it was
caused by human error, or a problem with the equipment or a combination of the
two.’
