A BIZARRE situation has meant a grandmother has given birth to her own grandchild.
Proud Tracey Thompson gave birth to a baby girl earlier this week.
The odd generational jumble is due to Tracey being a surrogate for her daughter.
Tracey offered to carry the baby for her daughter Kelley McKissack when she struggled to get pregnant herself.
She experienced three miscarriages and undergone multiple fertility treatments when Tracey offered.
Although 53-year-old Tracey went through menopause seven years previously, medical advances and close supervision allowed her to be a surrogate. An embryo from a previous IVF attempt was implanted in the procedure.
"When I was in my 20s and pregnant with Kelley and her brother it was easy," she told CBS News.
"This time around it was difficult. It was just exhausting."
Kelley and her husband, who live in North Texas, US, named the baby Kelcey – a combination of Tracey and Kelley.
The pair said that they will be sure to tell Kelcey her unconventional roots as she grows up."This is such a blessing that I can do this for my daughter," Tracey said.
